Sar Bachan Poetry: Selections
![]() The second volume of Sar Bachan consists of the poetry by Soami Ji Maharaj. The poems convey the teachings of Sant Mat, the mystic path taught by Soami Ji. They are powerful exhortations for us to awaken to the true reality of life and devote ourselves to the only lasting relationship, with God, through devotion to the inner meditation practice. Soami Ji forcefully addresses such questions as: Who are we? Where do we come from? Why are we here? Is there a rational explanation for the events of life? Where can we go to get guidance on personal evolution? Is it possible to achieve our human potential and fully realize life's purpose, and if so, how? Prologue
Invocation
Come friends, let us sing a song
Radha Soami has taken a human form
While I rejoice in the bliss of his darshan
Establish your base at the third eye
Fear and doubt besiege my mind
I see the uniqueness of the path
Supreme bliss fills my inner being
On this auspicious day, my friend
Lord, your humble devotee
Today, friend, my soul offers a prayer
I enshrine my Guru’s feet in my heart
With hands joined in prayer
I have found my Master
My love for my Guru deepens
O friend, the Guru bestows true understanding
Listen to the tale of love, O loving soul!
My Guru’s feet now abide in my heart
Take refuge in the Master, dear soul
Today I have come under the Master’s protection
Oh what folly
How can I spell out all the subtle ways
Hold fast to Shabd with the Master’s grace
Without Shabd humanity has gone blind
Listen to the melody of Shabd
The two kinds of Nam
Listen, my friend, while I tell you
Do not be deceived
A debased version of the Guru-disciple relationship
Search for a true Guru, my dear friend
The soul, having separated from Shabd
Soul, who are you?
In whatever way possible, associate with the Truth
Why don’t you listen, dear soul
I know, dear soul, that you have been in distress
O soul, what foolishness you are caught in!
Heavy, intense darkness prevails in the world
Your concern with social standing
Be on your guard, O wayfarer
None of your companions are truly your well-wishers
Keep the fear of death in your heart day and night
You have come into the world and entangled yourself
My mind, abandon this abode of pleasure and pain
Observe how the whole world is going adrift
Will someone please heed my words!
Why do you tarry in this world, brother!
Now that you have received this human form
Go through life with understanding
O mind, why be proud!
How can man be on guard against this world?
How can I rid myself of the misconceptions?
Let me explain to you, brother
You faltered through a million lives
Accept your Guru after thorough scrutiny, brother
Do only as the Master bids
Live in the will of the Master, my friend
A good part of your life
Contemplate on the form of the Master, dear soul
Without the Master
Attach yourself to the melody of Shabd, dear soul
Take refuge in the Master, O yearning soul!
The Master washes the mind clean
Go to the Guru’s ghaat, O mind
O mind, listen to the strains of the unstruck music
Everyone is blind, says the Master
Why are you confused and disheartened, dear soul!
Why not submit to the Master?
Kill your mind, burn your body
Let us turn homewards, friend
O mind, see how sick this world is
Practise meditation and be absorbed within
The Master explains fully
Turn around and listen
Hold the mind still and grind it within
Why do you drink water, O swan soul?
Separate water from milk, O swan soul!
Be gentle of heart, fill your mind with compassion
Put your mind to satsang
I have fallen in love with your beautiful form, Master!
I rose into the sky and saw the light
I am in love with the form of my Master
The drop that is the soul left the ocean of truth
To whom shall I reveal my secret, brother?
The whole world is overwhelmed by delusion
Mighty Kal has set out
My heart aches with the pain of separation
My heart is distraught with anguish
My friend, my sleeping fortune has woken up today
The Master has arrived to grace my home
Take hold of my arm, my Master
My Guru is the benefactor, I am the slave
How can I sing your praises, Master?
I have looked within, my friend
How can I free myself from the grip of this mind?
My restless mind doesn’t listen to me
How can I get along with this mind, my friend!
Superficially you sing the praises of the Guru
O mind, listen to the one petition I place before you
The mind spoke to the soul
My helpless mind now cries for darshan
Every moment the fear of death overshadows my heart
Give me the gift of Nam, O Master!
Cast your merciful glance on me, Master
You have come all the way from your eternal home
Let me come to your primal home, O Master
Reveal your own real form to me, Master
Listen, dear soul, and let me explain
Open the window of my heart
An intense longing for darshan
The vessel of my heart is filled with love
My Master has given me the alchemy of Nam
Peeping through the window of my heart
Without Shabd the soul has gone astray
Everything my Master has taught me is upside down
